For all who have seen both the original Emperor-Vader sequence in The Empire Strikes Back, and the 2004 update version with new dialogue and' 'face', which do you think works best?

Though i can only vaguely remember the original sequence i think the new updated scene looks better. Thats an interesting question and one that has never been asked here at SWU.

The remake is vastly superior to the original. The first one was played and voiced by another actor alltogether.

The one who played Palpy in the unaltered version was a female actress.

I think the 2004 version works best. I mean it doesn't seem right to have one actor play a character then another. The original actor they had played the emperor in TESB did not sound or like Ian. The new dialogue doesn't bother me much. I just wish George had reshot the footage of Ian in the 1980's after jedi cause he just looks different now with all the makeup.

It is rather interesting to note the painstaking detail they did to make Ian look more like the 'Return of the Jedi' Emperor, and yet he looks so different for much of ROTS, except arguably towards the very end.

Of course, I absolutely dig the new version, dialogue changes and all. Ian has a much more sinister 'Emperor' voice than whoever did it before. But his face is more like ROTS than 'Jedi.'

That is correct. The ESB Palpatine was portrayed by an unknown female actress and was voiced by Clive Revill.

I also must agree with the new one beeing better it's just a continuality subject. one charether should mostly been the same. it would have looked real bad if for example Sidious would have been differen between TESB and ROTJ.

I also like the new one better but as always the old one will always have a spot cause its classic.

The updated version of the scene is one of the few 'improvements' that I am happy with. Not only does it make the continuity between the original and prequel trilogy more solid, it forms a better link between Ep IV and Ep V.
Having the Emperor portrayed by two different actors in two back to back films was a bad idea.
